There's a Craigslist post that's been floating around on Facebook for the last few days from a Puget Sound poster that my friend Aya directed my attention to. After reading through this the first few times, and reading Aya's so gracefully written response, I realize that perhaps this poster just needs some education. So, Puget Sound Bride with a capital B, here it goes.

First, finding an "amazing photographer" in the Seattle area is not difficult. You've already established this. There's a lot of talent in this area, and none of it has come quickly and easily. It's a competitive market, especially in today's world when everyone and their Uncle Bob has a DSLR and Photoshop. The good ones inevitably rise above all of that, but it's very hard work. It takes years to perfect a style, years to know a fully manual camera like an extension of your hand, and years (unless you have a trust fund) to build a collection of equipment that enables you to create the kind of images that you see in your head. It is an emotional, physical and financial journey. And for most photographers, a lot of it starts long before you're able to be self-employed, and you're still working a 40+ hour per week job while also shooting full time.

Second, the price tag has both nothing and everything to do with the word "wedding." I'd like to first state that most photographers who are experienced enough to produce journalistic-style wedding images that could easily be printed in a magazine somewhere are also at a level where they could potentially take the commercial route as well. And in case you're unaware, commercial photography comes at a much higher price tag than wedding photography. This is also for good reason, because your skills are contributing to the sale of a product. But my reason for pointing this out, is to help you understand that in the grand scheme of professional photography, $3,000 to accurately and beautifully document a day you literally want to remember for the rest of your existence is both appropriate, and not that much. As Aya pointed out, documenting a wedding cannot be boiled down to simply "showing up and taking a bunch of pictures." As a hired photographer, the fate of the one thing that the couple and family will have forever to remember this incredibly important day is resting solely in your hands. That feeling is so, so heavy. It's also what pushes us to be the best.

Third, let's talk about the facts here. Many couples, through no fault of their own, sometimes just need to be educated on what actually goes into shooting a wedding. There are meetings that happen before the wedding day. Planning is done, itineraries are made, maps and routes are made, a lot of information is collected and exchanged. This takes time. There's usually a rehearsal I attend to familiarize myself with the lay of the land, and how the ceremony will go down. It's also a chance for me to meet some of the family for the first time. I never charge my clients extra for this, and sometimes it's an hour of driving each way. Then the wedding day arrives, and we're required to be at our absolute sharpest and quickest for a minimum of 8, usually 10, and sometimes 12 hours. Straight through. We're also carrying 20 pounds and $10,000+ in equipment around, by the way. So now the day is over and we've shot roughly 1,000 to 1,500 images. Those images now have to go through a 2-3 week process of backing up three times, narrowing down, adjusting for exposure, color, etc, grouping into categories, and finally uploading, burning and delivering. And like Aya said, we look at every image. Also of note, the equipment back at the office that's required to do all of that? A pretty chunk of change as well. And while it may seem like we're all "making so much money it's crazy," I'd encourage you to consider how expensive it is to be in business for yourself. The cost of health insurance alone, as a business owner, is absolutely crippling.

So, by now I hope you have a clearer idea of why the price tag of a good wedding photographer is what it is. People who shoot weddings are not typically rotten people. We're usually personable, passionate and romantic. We want to be there to document the emotion of your wedding day. We want to be your friend. We are not in the business of taking advantage of people. We're simply asking to be compensated for the years of extremely hard work we've put into becoming what we are. Because going out on your own takes a lot of courage, and stress, and time. But I'm sure I'm speaking for the others when I say we do it because we adore it. It makes us feel alive.

Lastly, $3,000 is the high end of the spectrum in the Puget Sound area. If you haven't found a great photographer for under this, you don't know how to use the Internet. Best of luck to you in finding a photographer that matches your needs. But a word of caution: don't enter the relationship with zero respect. When it comes down to it, we're artists. And we do our best work under good energy, not bad.

I seem to have and attract really wonderful clients. I think this in part due to the kind of wedding photography I do, but I still feel incredibly lucky, regardless of what the reason for my luck might actually be. And when I can make new friends out of wedding clients, that's just a huge bonus.

The big west coast roadtrip of April started with Sarah & Natalie's wedding in San Francisco at El Rio in The Mission district. Theirs was my first same-sex wedding, and I genuinely cannot say enough good things about these two people. Sarah and I had a phone call a couple of months before the big day, and I knew five minutes in she and Nat were "my people." Plus, Sarah's a photographer as well! Shooting for photographer brides is typically awesome, so I was excited. The entire day was full of emotion, humor and joy, and I wish I could shoot 20 more weddings just like theirs. I also wanted to mention that this wedding was completely DIY. Sarah made, by hand, just about all of the decor and details. You can see all of her posts about their wedding on the So You're EnGAYged blog.

Congrats ladies - I wish you so many years of love and happiness, and feel honored to have been a witness to your wedding day. Also, you win the award for best speeches at a wedding. Ever.

I told you I was behind. Adam + McKenna got married in April, so I thought I'd get this slideshow posted before Fall rolls around.

The Pacific Northwest can be a small place. When I first met Adam and McKenna last year, the conversation went probably thirty minutes before discovering that Adam and I went to college in the same town. Even bigger of a coincidence? I lived in a duplex with two units. His best man (and a handful of other gentlemen) had one. I had the other. Needless to say, Adam spent a lot of time drinking beer (I'm sure of age, of course) above my head. They even know my dog. Go Vandals!

Anyway - I knew upon meeting these two that their wedding would be a blast, and it didn't disappoint. They made me feel like a guest, and I had such a great time spending the entire day with them. Even in the pouring Seattle rain! Thanks you two for being such a joy, and giving me such a fantastic wedding to shoot. I'd also like to give huge thanks to the lovely Adrian Busse for helping me second-shoot for a couple of hours on this one.

On April 13th, I left Seattle in my car with my dog, four cameras, an ipod, a flat of water and some granola bars and proceeded to spend three weeks driving all over the western coast of the United States. I drove 4,070 miles in solitude, and took roughly 4,500 photographs (only about 50 of them were personal). I saw and stayed with friends that I hadn't seen in far too long. I made new friends that have already become dear to my heart. I saw clients I hadn't seen in months and years. I even made nine jars of pickles while in Phoenix. Thanks for those mason jars, Dad.

I got back to Seattle about a week and a half ago, and haven't stopped moving since. Two commercial shoots and roughly 50 hours of editing have happened in that time, and still lots to go. This photo, that I took at 30,000 feet somewhere between Arizona and Washington about three years ago is serving as my serenity.

(flights where you're chasing the sunset are epic, because it lasts for hours)

I will surface soon, but in the meantime wanted to say thank you (from the bottom of my heart) to everyone who put me up, had lunch with me, had beers with me, took me to see new things, and to the clients who employed me during those three weeks. It was a trip for the books, and you made it possible for me. Thank you!

I have about a million photographs to get through from European adventures, which I fully intend to share with you. Especially those from Joe & Jessica's hitching in Venice. Off to Minneapolis on Wednesday! Here's a photo of the mad storm we drove through on the way back to Seattle from Spokane, WA this Sunday after an old friend's wedding.

A couple of weeks ago I traveled to Portland to photograph Nicole & Dustin's wedding. I don't even really know where to begin in describing this experience. I feel like I've met two kind, loving and hilarious people that I would never have met otherwise. They were married in a park, in the trees, with lots of golden sunlight. Thanks so much to both of you for making me a part of your wedding day. Between the two of your faces, I think you'll be doing this world a favor if you decide to make some babies.

I will be leaving the country this Saturday, the 28th, and will not return to Seattle until September 20th. I'll have very limited Internet and phone access while away, so I appreciate your patience with my responses during that time. Hope everyone has a beautiful fall.

Last month, I went allll the way to Connecticut (first time!) to photograph Matt & Kristen's wedding. I feel really lucky to have met them both, along with all of their friends and family, who were so kind to me. The humidity almost killed me, but I made it through. Click the image below to see photos from this day.

And if you're feeling really energetic, and just need to watch another slideshow... here's an hour and a half of Connecticut photobooth madness crammed into two minutes. We rolled up the doors and shot this in the neighbor's garage, which is why you'll see a number of hilariously random things entering and exiting.

It's so beautiful out today, I just want to lay in it. For like 8 hours.

And in the evening, our living room fills up with sunshine like this.
